For over 100 years, we’ve continued to evolve and adapt. Today, as the nation’s number one motoring organisation, we offer a range of excellent products and services to millions of customers from roadside assistance to home and motor insurance as well as providing the latest driving technologies. As we continue to expand, diversify, and modernise, joining us as our Data Engineer, you’ll play a key part to our success and join us on this exciting motoring journey.
This is the job
We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join our team and help shape the future of underwriting data. You’ll design and build cloud-based data pipelines using Microsoft Azure, write clean Python code, and work closely with stakeholders to turn data into actionable insights.
This role offers the chance to improve performance, ensure data quality and compliance, and support users with data-related queries, all while driving innovation and continuous improvement.
What will I be doing?
- Shape the future of data by designing and building robust pipelines that seamlessly ingest, transform, and deliver underwriting insights from a variety of sources.
- Harness the power of Azure to develop and maintain cutting-edge, cloud-native data architectures using tools like Azure Data Factory, Synapse, and Databricks.
- Collaborate and innovate by working closely with stakeholders to translate complex data needs into smart, scalable technical solutions.
- Champion data integrity by ensuring our systems meet the highest standards of quality, governance, and regulatory compliance.
- Drive performance by optimising data systems for both real-time and batch processing, ensuring speed and scalability.
- Monitor pipelines, troubleshoot issues, and keep our data flowing smoothly.
- Build intelligence into our underwriting datasets through thoughtful data modelling and metadata management.
- Support our users by responding to data incidents and helping the team triage and resolve queries quickly and effectively.
- Work within a strong framework, using our technical architecture, documentation standards, governance policies, and procedures to deliver excellence.
What do I need?
Capability, Knowledge and Experience:
- Proven experience as a Data Engineer or in a similar role, with hands-on expertise in Python, ETL, SQL, and cloud-based environments.
- Strong proficiency in Python, especially for data processing and automation tasks.
- Solid experience with ETL tools and frameworks such as Apache Airflow, Talend, or Informatica.
- Deep understanding of cloud platforms, ideally Microsoft Azure, and familiarity with services like Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, and Azure SQL Database.
- A track record of working directly with end users to gather requirements and deliver effective, user-centric data solutions.
- Hands-on experience with Databricks for big data processing and analytics.
- Familiarity with big data technologies like Apache Spark.
- Experience in real-time data processing and handling XML files.
