As Head of Sustainability & Environment, you will lead the team that is responsible for embedding sustainability across our organisation. This high-impact, high-visibility role offers the opportunity to shape and deliver initiatives that align with our ESG framework, meet regulatory and best practice standards, and reflect the values and expectations of our stakeholders. You’ll collaborate across all business areas to drive meaningful change and ensure sustainability is at the heart of everything we do.
As a member of the Group Risk and Compliance leadership team, you’ll work closely with the Chief Risk Officer to define and implement the strategic direction of the function. You’ll be a visible champion of our Group values—especially collaboration—bringing teams together to support our long-term vision. What will I be doing?
- Serve as a subject matter expert in Sustainability and ESG, collaborating with business leaders to embed impactful strategies across the organisation.
- Maintain governance mechanisms that ensure ESG matters are prioritised, reviewed and acted upon appropriately by senior leaders at The AA.
- Lead the development and delivery of statutory and voluntary ESG reporting, ensuring transparency and effective oversight.
- Manage relationships with external ESG rating agencies, coordinating responses and driving improvement plans with internal teams.
- Support with investor and customer ESG enquiries in partnership with the treasury and business services team, contributing to clear and confident communications.
- Guide business areas in meeting sustainability and environmental regulatory requirements, helping to build strong control frameworks that manage risk effectively.
- Shape and coordinate Net Zero initiatives across the Group, aligning activities with our published commitments and tracking progress.
- Monitor emerging ESG legislation and ensure proactive planning to meet new regulatory expectations.
What do I need?
Capability, Knowledge and Experience:
- Strong understanding of sustainability and responsible business) strategies, frameworks, and advisory tools.
- Hands-on experience of reporting against sustainability related regulations and standards like TCFD, ISSB, CDP, Ecovadis and the Modern Slavery Act.
- Proven ability to develop and implement carbon reduction plans across varied business functions, with fleet decarbonisation experience being particularly valuable.
- Experience of leading on environmental management including maintaining an ISO 14001 certified EMS and complying with complex environmental regulations.
- Deep knowledge of ESG topics across environmental, social, and governance areas, with a track record of integrating these into business strategy to deliver measurable impact.
- Awareness of sustainability-related legislation, standards, and international best practices.
- Confidence working directly with senior executives, with a proactive and solutions-focused mindset.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience engaging at executive and board level.
- Experience of managing direct reports including setting objectives, providing feedback, managing performance and supporting professional development.
